For Assembly:

- 6-8 small mason jars (8 oz size)

- Chocolate chips, sprinkles, or any other desired toppings

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Cake:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. Add the vegetable oil, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.

4. Slowly add the hot water or coffee, mixing continuously until the batter is smooth.

5. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9x13 inch baking pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6. Let the cake cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

2. Prepare the Frosting:

1. In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy.

2. Add the cocoa powder and beat until well combined.

3. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream, and beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

4. Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Mix well.

3. Assemble the Jar Cakes:

1. Once the cake is completely cool, use a round cookie cutter (the size of your jar opening) to cut out rounds of cake.

2. Place one layer of cake at the bottom of each mason jar.

3. Add a layer of frosting on top of the cake layer.

4. Repeat the layers until the jar is almost full, finishing with a layer of frosting on top.

5. Add toppings such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, or crushed cookies.

4. Serve or Store:

1. Close the jars with their lids and store in the refrigerator if not serving immediately.

2. Jar cakes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
